about

This song was first sung by Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Anthony founded the suffrage movement and Douglas, an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, statesman and former slave was the national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts. This song was sung by Anthony and Douglass on July 4, 1876
at the Women’s Centennial Celebration of American.

After singing the song Anthony and Douglass read The Woman’s Declaration of Rights to a cheering crowd.

Phoebe’s note: The use of “John Brown” as the melody of this song amplifies the strong ties between the Abolitionist Movement and Women’s Suffrage.

lyrics

“Our hearts have felt the glory of the coming of the time,
When Law and Love shall make our land sublime,
When every mountain hill and rock with freedom’s light will shine,
And truth goes marching on.
Glory Glory Hallelujah 3X The Truth is Marching On!
They saw it in the shadows of the old New England Bay,
They heard it in the breezes on that cold December day,
They sent it as a message to Brittania far away
And truth comes marching on...
Glory...glory
The trumpet that has sounded shall never call retreat
Down the centuries softly we hear the stamp of feet,
Today we are marching to that good old music sweet
and Truth is marching on
Glory, Glory...
We're here to swell the anthem
that was heard across the sea,
that Equal Rights and Love and Law
were made for you and me,
For every law was founded on the plains of liberty
and truth comes marching on
Glory Glory....Truthalujah!
