about

Based on a traditional Wabanaki song I added a pop chorus. The 3rd verse in in Abenaki, a language spoken fluently by 5 remaining Abenaki elders. We are in the process of recovering our language. Here is the Abenaki traditional verse:
Bos Kin Dela Bin el mi nelamw88ood
El mi Si Gwok lo tabay gee lok lo
Chi duke knabe hee sa kwai la gwetin (welcome the canoe!)
Koo way noo dee noo koo way noo dee noo.

This is a song about the way we used rivers as highways before the whites invaded our paradise. If you heard someone singing in Abenaki or a Wabanaki dialect you knew it was a friend and you welcomed them warmly. We have no word for hello or goodbye, only Kwai Kwai! It means Welcome Welcome!
